1993 - Dale Johnson, Professor of Art at Bethel University, St. Paul, Minnesota, won an artist in residence at Altos de Chavon School of Design, La Romana, Dominican Republic.

1994 - Johnson established and began offering the interim art course at Altos de Chavon School of Design, “Painting in the Dominican Republic” through Bethel University, St. Paul, Minnesota.
Johnson formed a relationship with the people of the Bancola barrio of La Romana, Dominican Republic.
2000 - Molly Irwin, a student of Johnson, began giving art instruction to children living in the Bancola barrio of La Romana, Dominican Republic. The art classes continue to be offered in the same Bancola barrio annually.
2005 - A building to house the art programs (classroom and studio space) and provide living quarters for instructors was purchased and renovated through an individual contribution to Dia Vivo.
2006 - Formation of Board of Directors and Incorporation.
